PUBLIC EDUCATION COURSES

The Coast Guard Auxiliary offers a variety of public education courses designed to inform and equip recreational boaters of all levels.  Instruction is provided free of charge, however this does not include any course materials that may be required.  All courses are taught by knowledgeable qualified Auxiliarists who are dedicated to boating safety. 

Below you will find a partial list of available courses offered by the Auxiliary.  Contact your local Auxiliary representative for updated information or if you have any questions.

Boating Skills & Seamanship courses are taught at the West Marine Store at Dana Landing (off Ingraham Street in Mission Bay).  Find directions here.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

COURSE DATES
  • Boating Skills & Seamanship:   A comprehensive course for both the novice and experienced boater.  Course material includes handling your boat, equipment, legal requirements, navigation, and basic radio communication.
 To be determined
  • Navigation:   Taught in two parts, this course covers both basic and advanced topics.  Specific lessons include:  the marine magnetic compass, tides and tidal currents, radio navigation, reference publications, and fuel and voyage planning.

  • GPS for Navigators:   This modern class focuses on the functions and uses of Global Positioning Systems and equipment typically owned by the recreational boater.  Ownership of a GPS is not required for enrollment.

  • Personal Watercraft Safety:   This course is geared toward the recreational watercraft operator.  The basic course is not NASBLA approved nor does it meet state mandatory education requirements.
